The Maserati MC20 Cielo won’t hit showrooms until around a year from now, but it has already made quite a splash. This beautiful, futuristic convertible has everything you would expect from a car in this class. So far, this model has only been available as a coupé, but from next year open car enthusiasts will also be able to put one in their garage.
Under the bonnet…
As usual, we take a look under the bonnet to start with. There are no surprises here: we have a 3-litre Nettuno engine with 630 horsepower and 730 Nm of torque. Such parameters make this car a helluva powerful machine: the first “parcel” appears on the display after 3 seconds and the top speed is 320 km/h. What’s more, it can also be achieved without a roof.
Speaking of the roof, it is worth devoting an entire paragraph to it. It is a completely new design that folds up in basically the blink of an eye (i.e. in 12 seconds). Thanks to the electrochromic window, the light transmission can be adjusted, which is made possible through the use of a dispersed liquid crystal polymer (PDLC). The roof was developed in collaboration with Webasto engineers.
The Maserati MC20 Cielo is a car with futuristic lines and doors that open upwards. As the car’s roof is not a structural element, the designers had to ensure structural rigidity otherwise. This translates into a weight slightly higher than that of the roofed model – the convertible weighs 1540 kg.
The aerodynamics have also been changed – the air intakes for the engine are in a different position and boomerang-shaped intakes have appeared at the rear. Other modifications were also necessary to ensure that, even with the roof open, the airflow does not “attack” the driver and passenger.
Inside, there are no surprises – all elements are worked to perfection, the displays are easy to read, the leather is soft and pleasant to the touch. The cabin is brilliantly lit, which, combined with the cool colour scheme of the trim, gives a sense of lightness.
A limited series
The price of the new Maserati is not known, but it is already known that the first series will be limited and will number 60 cars. As I know life, they all already have an owner.
